1. 研究目的与意义

Theresearch of coherence has significant meaning in discourse analysis. It hasmany incompatible definitions. So the concept of coherence, due to itsambiguity, is regarded as a field of rare research value. Coherence is theessential attribute that makes a text easy to accept and understand. It is thecharacteristic that distinguishes between discourses and sentence sequences(i.e. non-text) which are arranged randomly. Therefore, the study on coherenceis conductive to the people#8217;s grasping the information and facts in discourseand provides a new research perspective for discourse analysis.

Greatachievements in the study of discourse coherence have been made at home andabroad, but unfortunately, no comprehensive and clear theoretical framework ofit has been formed. So the establishment of the theory of coherence shows itsnecessity and urgency.

In addition, the coherenceof discourse is different due to the various types of discourse. As a uniquegenre, news discourse has its distinctive linguistic features which also bringimportance for this study.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

Discoursecoherence is the most basic and important content in discourse analysis. On thebasis of studying the different definitions of coherence by predecessors, thispaper selects English news discourse as the research object, and makes adetailed discourse analysis of the content of news English based on the relevanttheories of discourse coherence in functional linguistics, so as to explore theway to realize the coherence of news English. Based on the analysis of thecharacteristics of English news discourse, this paper demonstrates theexistence of coherence in news English through specific text analysis.

1.Studies on Coherence

Asan important topic of text linguistics, coherence has drawn much attention andis widely discussed by linguists (Widdowson, 1978; Enrlich, 1990; Brown andYule, 1983). Previously, coherence was considered to be of little researchvalue because of its ambiguity, uncertainty and even its mysterious color. Atpresent, the study of discourse coherence has gone through three stages ofdevelopment: the linguistic form level, the pragmatic level and thepsychological cognitive level.
