1. 研究目的与意义

Alice#8217;sAdventures in Wonderland is a popular children#8217;s book fullof word games e.g. puns and assonance, therefore it is difficult to translate.Of all its translations, Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translation is typical, and is highlypraised for successfully translating the word games and reproducing thehumorous effect of the original text.

Nevertheless, some of his translations still have roomfor improvement. However, previous research mainly focused on appreciating ZhaoYuanren#8217;s translation, while neglecting that some of his translation could beimproved. Therefore, the paper intends to point out Zhao Yuanren#8217;s imperfecttranslation, which is usually neglected by previous research, and give improvedversion.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The paper intends to focus on analyzing andimproving the imperfect part of Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translation of Alice#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland, aswell as present his translation style and status, appreciate his greattranslation, and explore reasons for limitations of his translation.

The paper is divided into four parts. The first partgives a brief introduction about the original book and its translation,including features of the original book, style, features, and status of ZhaoYuanren#8217;s translation and relevant literature review. The second part is goingto introduce translation standard, cases of Zhao Yuanren#8217;s great translation,and his translation that can be better, including rhetorical devices, slang andnursery rhyme. The third part is going to introduce reasons for limitations ofZhao#8217;s translation from the aspects of historical background, personal reasonsand translation principle. The last part is the conclusion.

3. 国内外研究现状

Mostof previous research appreciated Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translation, while only alittle research pointed out that some of his translation needed improving. Theprevious research also analyzed Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translation methods and writingstyle.

Interms of translation methods, Shi Si [施思] (2014) suggested that Zhao Yuanrenused domestication to attract children, his targeted readers. Wu Feng [伍锋] and Yang Yuyang [杨渝阳] (2014) agreed that ZhaoYuanren sacrificed faithfulness in meaning for faithfulness in writing style toconvince readers and overcome cultural and language obstacles.However, with their statistical analysis, ShiSi [施思] and Zhang Yuejun [张跃军] (2013) held a divergentview that although domestication was held essential, foreignization was stillheld as a supplement in Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translation. Similarly, Hu Bo [胡波] (2012) was of theopinion that Zhao Yuanren used multiple translation methods based on histhorough understanding of the original text.

ShiSi [施思] (2014) suggested thatalthough Alice#8217;s Adventures in Wonderlandhad many rhetorical devices, e.g. assonance, puns, and acrostic, which wasdifficult to translate, Zhao Yuanren creatively translated these word games toreproduce the taste and artistic characteristics of the original text. PanYuqin [潘玉琴] (2017) held a moreconcrete view that to maintain the original flavor of the original book, ZhaoYuanren used replacement, transfer, addition, etc. Yang Ping [杨平] (2013) held the samebelief that Zhao Yuanren creatively translated puns and assonance to reproducethe equal effect. Nevertheless, this paper disagrees with some of theseviews, and points out the demerits of Zhao#8217;s translation, parts of which ishighly praised by scholars. This paper presents Zhao Yuanren#8217;s translationstyle and features by analyzing his translation methods and appreciating hisgreat translation.
