1. 研究目的与意义

Murder on The Orient Express, asa typical representative of detective fiction, has been adapted into movies. However, these movies all focus on forming the suspense atmosphere and theimage of detective Poirot, and forget the performance of humanity analysis of12 criminals who were the real protagonists.

Onthe other hand, previous studies on Murderon The Orient Express have examined the differences of detective fictionbetween Conan Doyle and Agatha, or the narrative characteristics in Murder on The Orient Express. However, few studies have been conducted from the perspective of these 12 criminals toanalyze the weakness of human nature. It can be easily seen that the criminalsall are given deserved punishments by law in past detective novels beforeAgatha#8217;s. However, in this novel, these 12 criminals are simultaneouslyvictims. Which should be preferred between private remedy and legal justice?

There are not only murders in detective fiction. Italso includes a crucial condition which is called humanity. This is afundamental factor in promoting the development of the entire murder case orsuspense narrative structure. Therefore, the thesis will prove that the analysisof human nature itself is a major innovation in detective novels, which makesthe popular literature genre with positive practical significance.

3. 国内外研究现状

AgathaChristie, a famous mystery writer of 19th century in England, is considered amaster of suspense, plotting, and characterization (Sandra Engelhardt, 2003).Although Agatha#8217;s works have a huge readership and audience base in China, herworks#8217; literary merit has had a considerable impact not being academic enoughattention. This is mainly because that detective fiction belongs to lightliterature with strong entertainment.

Inrelated papers, they only focus on images of characters or suspense narrativecharacteristics. For example, Zeng Xiangli told that simple femaleconsciousness made Agatha#8217;s creation different from Conan Doyle''s male textmode (Zeng Xiangli, 2006). However, she did not explore feminism in depth. Asfor the suspense narrative characteristics, in #8220;Mirage: On the Charm ofChristie Agatha''s fiction#8221; (Cui Di, 2008), which discussed the question ofwriting structure. And other similar theme of papers just listed the creativetechniques of novels. The problem is a lack of the research on the literaturevalue.

Atabroad, many colleges have launched courses called #8220;detective fiction#8221; inliterature institutes. The lectures are mainly about history, creativetechniques and criticism of detective fiction. For example, I. I. Revzinanalyzed Agatha#8217;s novels from the perspective of structuralist Semiotics andtried to build unified framework (I. I. Revzin, 1978). Agatha was also calledas #8220;arch-breaker of rules#8221; by P. D. James who simply reviewed the breakthroughsto traditional detective fiction in Agatha#8217;s works (P. D. James, 2009).Although there are many research materials abroad, few books or papers analyzedthe literature value from the perspective of characters#8217; human nature.
