1. 研究目的与意义
John Steinbeck was one of the most outstanding American writers in the 20th century. Most of his works were written during the Great Depression. In 1962, Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for Literature for The Grapes of Wrath. The novel plays an important role in the history of American literature and even world literature, with distinctive characteristics of the times and multiple research values.
So far, many scholars have interpreted The Grapes of Wrath from different angles. They focused on analyzing the novel''s connotation from the aspects of the novel''s structural features, description methods, and political perspectives. New historicism is a relatively new theory, and only a few people currently analyze this work from this point.

2.1 Research Content
New historicism believes that history and text have a close relationship and cannot be viewed in isolation. History is not a complete objective fact, and text is not a complete literary structure. History and text influence each other. This thesis starts from the perspective of new historicism, taking the Great Depression of the United States in the 1930s as the historical background, to analyze how the historicity of text and textuality of history are embodied in The Grapes of Wrath, how the American Dream is subverted and how it affects the society.

3.1.1 Period of quietude
In 1939, when The Grapes of Wrath was published in the United States, it caused a national sensation and was even restricted by the US state ruling groups. Due to the influence of the political environment, critics praised it as a 'proletarian monograph'. The famous critic Malcolm Cowley compares the novel with Uncle Tom''s Cabin during the abolitionist movement, and both motivate people to rise up against the unbearable humiliation. Edward Weeks believes that the novel is 'a masterpiece of realism over the past 18 years. The contradictions such as hunger, and poverty described in the novel are the direct causes of public anger. Joseph Warren Beath considers it the best example of proletarian fiction in recent years.
