1. 研究目的与意义
News plays an important role in showing a nation’s image. And news can be separated into hard, intermediary and soft news. Soft news is different from the other two due to its flexible pattern, easy style and strong emotions. The accuracy and on-time information embedded in news influences the efficiency of communication and interaction between different countries. However, these characteristics of soft news poses challenges for translators. The translation of soft news is very different from that of literature and other documents since news are designed to report immediate information.
According to Nord’s functionalist theory, the main focus of translation is on the function and loyalty of the translated version. Nord divides translation into two kinds: documentary and instrumental ones. The former requires translators to repeat original information in the target language, using the same way of expressing the source contents. Documentary translation is commonly used in the translation of hard news including political news since the contents need to be unbiased. The latter allows translators to make necessary adjustments and reconstruction, aiming to facilitate the understandings for readers. For example, the Chinese writers prefer to use four-character phrases and long sentences which are difficult to translate. Considering such trouble, translators are able to use substitute expressions in the target language. The theory of loyalty asks translators to take account of target readers’ expectations when translating. In the context of soft news, many phrases are impressive and appealing. When dealing with such phrases, translators must convey the original emotion to readers. However, Nord disagrees with Veemer’s radical translation which calls for innovative and bold free translation. In terms of soft news translation, accurate information is the top priority while readability is also significant.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
This thesis focuses on the C-E translation of soft news, aiming to figure out the translation strategies and their application in the context, based on the principles of Nord’s functionalist theory. In order to analyze the characteristics and difficulty of the translation of soft news, this thesis is divided into four parts.
The first part is introduction which explains the importance and meaning of soft news translation and current research on this kind of translation from both domestic and foreign researchers.
3. 国内外研究现状
The study on translation from the perspective of Nord’s functionalist theory has a relatively long history abroad.Functionalist approaches appeared in Germany in 1970s, represented by Katarina Reiss, Hans Vermeer, Justa Holz-Manttari and Christiane Nord. This approach defines translation as “a complex action designed to achieve a particular purpose” (Nord, 2001). The translator, served as the mediatory agent in the intercultural communication, can “give advice and perhaps even warn against communicating in the intended way” (Nord, 2001) more than just render the text.Nida and Taber thought that translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message (Nida and Taber, 1969).
Research on the translation of news abound. Duan Liancheng’s article, 《呼吁:请译界同仁都来关心对外宣传》(A Call on Translators for Good Publicity Translation)(段连城,1990) is a breakthrough to the development of C-E publicity translation, marking the starting point of systematic academic research in this field. Duan separated the mistakes of translation in publicity news into Symptom A which is related to spelling and grammar errors and Symptom B which is caused by Chinese jargon. In order to solve these problems, Duan suggested annotation, deletion and reconstruction. Allan Bell (1991) has made the detailed exploration in the domain media language in New Zealand and the UK since the 1970s. He undertook initially his study on mirolinguistic aspects of news language. Later, he turned to the macrolinguistic level discourse in the media; developing an analytically theoretical framework in his book The Language of News Media. Reiss (2001) believed that the type of text is the primary factor influencing the translator’s choice of a proper translation method.
Soft news is often characterized as news that entertains or informs, with an emphasis on human interest and novelty , which mainly consists of all kinds of social news, popular science articles and amusing briefs with a flexible style and a strong artistic appealing.(Rich, 1994) Tan Zaixi(2000) pointed out that some translators put more emphasis on the word-for-word translation while ignoring that clumsy patterns and strange translated words may confuse foreign readers. Such translation is quite opposite to what real translation appeals for. As China gains more attention, the C-E soft news translation becomes more and more important and seems to be a show window of China. Huang Youyi(2004) noted that translators should consider the cultural differences between different countries when translating news in Chinese into English. Wu Zixuan(2004)doubted whether the translating theory of “faithfulness” in terms of cultural differences and the specific needs of TV and radio news. He stresses that the translation must focus on conveying integrated information and need to abandon the original forms when necessary. Wu Zixuan(2005) thought that there exist many differences in language and culture, pattern of thinking, ideology and so on. He believes that translation is heavily dependent on context. When translators are trying to publicize China through soft news translation, it is necessary to be disloyal to the original superficially and reach a higher degree of fidelity. So, translators need to make some deletions and explanations in order to make C-E translation more acceptable by foreign readers. In 2006, Qian Yeping and Wang Yinquan(2006) noted that in order to reach the expectation of foreign readers, translators could make necessary deletions and adaptations without distorting the original information. In 2012, Yu Lijuan (2012) published an article in which she said translators needed to change the clumsy patterns of long sentences in Chinese in order to facilitate the understanding of foreign readers. Additionally, translators should get rid of the restrictions caused by Chinglish expressions.Wei Qianqian(2007) in her essay proposed that translators make necessary creation when confronted by flowery and repetitive Chinese expressions in order to convey concise and complete information. Ye Yin’s thesis (2018)says that most translators abandon the vivid patterns and contents of Chinese, which does not applies well in all the different kinds of soft news. So, if possible, translators need to make vivid translations. Chen Zheng(2005) in his A Study On C-E translation from a Relevance-theory Perspective suggested translators to do condensed translation, addition and reformulation.
