Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist known for her novel Little Women. Because of family#8217;s financial difficulties, Louisa May Alcott took a succession of jobs before she sought a way out in writing. She wrote a novel in which she portrayed characters based on her childhood experiences with her three sisters. After the publication in 1868, Little Women was well received and is still very popular among readers all over the world today.Little Women presents the growth of the March girls with simple and beautiful language. It describes their pursuit of independence and equality and their loyalty to family. The March girls choose their lives wisely. They all represent the spirit of independence and self-reliance in spite of their different destinations. The plot is simple but content is rich and meaningful. Through the different experiences of the March girls who live in poverty, this novel vividly shows how they become mature and learn some valuable lessons. This paper is to analyze March girls#8217; growth from the feminist perspective and to explore the necessary stages that women have to experience if they want to be successful as they become mature. For one thing, by learning the spirit of the March girls, women can awaken their female consciousness and achieve maturity gradually. Inspired by the March girls, women can muster more courage to fight for independence, equality and freedom. For another thing, this novel focuses on the life of four girls and nearly every girl has a happy ending, thus it is a textbook for the female growth. From the novel, women can learn how to solve the problems in life. Views on love, family, marriage are instructional, enlightening and philosophic in this book. If women can learn from the March girls#8217; experiences, it will be easier for them to survive in modern world in which with the fast development of society the females are encountered with greater stresses and are more likely to be faced with difficulties. 3. 国内外研究现状
Little Women a classic of American literature and a great success in the whole world. Since its first publication in 1868, many scholars and researchers have been studying this novel from different perspectives. Regarding the content of this novel, much research has been done. Clark (2014) considered Little Women as a mutable text and analyzed how social context influenced the novel both directly and indirectly. Gao [高松] (2014) made an analysis of the main characters in Little Women to explore the specific performance of dedication and the formation of the spirit of dedication. Zhu [朱玉霜] (2017) proposed that the absence of presentation, the breaking of presentation, and the contrast of plot settings are the methods that Louisa May Alcott adopted to convey her own view on feminism. The success of Little Women lies in philosophic ideas as well as the artistic skills. Compared with the Bible, there is a strong intertextual contrast in this novel, such as main characters, scenes, narrative structures, themes, literary images and so on (Liu [刘智], 2016). Jiang [蒋永红] (2009) who used the stylistic approach to analyze the context and to explore the deep meanings emphasized #8220;the personality of the West#8221;. Liu [刘春英] (2001)stated that the dialogues and life in Little Women are simple but meaningful, which indicates that life is simple but beautiful and Louisa May Alcott was good at conveying such pleasures in life from aesthetical and philosophical angles.About themes in this novel, there are many different conclusions. The theme is to pursue virtue, love, marriage and morality and to improve ourselves in our growth (Yan [颜晨璐], 2015). Yu [于倩] (2011) studied Jo#8217;s choice of refusing Laurie and pointed out that the morality played an important role in her life and instructed her to stick to herself. Li [李巧玲](2006) explored the function of music in the novel and analyzed the relationship between the images of four girls and music. Miller (2010) pointed that the holistic and spiritual education in this novel was a reflection of Bronson Alcott and was still prevalent in the 21st century.Since the 1960s, many scholars have paid attention to the feminist interpretation of this novel. Gardiner (1981) proposed that this novel reflected women#8217;s struggle for identity and career in that period. Wen [温钊莲] (2008) analyzed Louisa May Alcott#8217;s views on female images and concluded that Alcott#8217;s views had limitations because women in this novel are not totally modern; instead, they are still conventional to a certain extent. Deng [邓菁菁] (2013) argued that novel is a typical American paternal novel that reflects the situation of the patriarchal society at that time in which women under the control of men were compliant, docile, although the females began to struggle for their rights.
