1. Theoretical significance

Leech’s Politeness Principle is used to analyze the conversation in real communication or given texts conventionally. Researches on verbal humor from the perspective of the Politeness Principle are very rare, not to mention analysis of humorous utterances in stand-up comedy. Therefore, unlike previous studies, this thesis attempts to explain and analyze the verbal humor in stand-up with the theoretic framework of the PP so as to prove its explanatory power in latest modern verbal humor.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This thesis is to exploit the mechanisms of the generation and perception of verbal humor from the pragmatic perspective by applying the Politeness Principle into explaining and analyzing the humorous utterances in stand-up comedy so as to prove the explanatory power of the Politeness Principle in latest modern verbal humor and to solve the key problem of how to achieve the humorous effect in stand-up comedy.

1. Introduction

In this section, a comprehensive description of the background information of related studies will be provided. The first part is about the definition of humor, and then I will give a general review of previous pragmatic researches on verbal humor. For the last part the theoretic framework in this thesis will be introduced briefly.

December 10-31: browse a large number of videos of stand-up comedy to find out the available materials.

January 1 to January 20: classify the corpus and start to analyze it.

January 21 to February 20: complete the first draft.
