At present, Chinese farmers have two distinctionsin image, which are said traditional farmers and new-type farmers. Theconcept of new-type farmer was created and put forward in the Fifth PlenarySession of the 16th CPC Central Committee (Niu Yufeng,2013).Andthe story timeline of this book is from 1950 to 2000. So that we cananalyze the role of farmers in this book as traditional farmers.

As traditional farmers, which are with fragilesmall-scale production method, they always feel powerless in front of natureand society. Therefore, when they deal with the relationship with nature andsociety, they sacrifice their individuality to adapt to the externalenvironment. So the value pursuit of traditional farmers is moralism, whichhas cultivated their outstanding qualities of perseverance (Niu Yufeng,2013).
