1. 研究目的与意义

People today, inundated by a hectic work schedule, growing financial burden, peer pressure, and so on, are particularly susceptible to pressure than the past generations. Luckily, they are not without an option. Verbal humor, as a unique means of communication, contributes a lot to helping people relax and bring them happiness. Being a hot topic for about 2000 years, humor is a special linguistic phenomenon which has been continuously developed and tested. Studies on humor have been carried out from many fields. Distinguished theorists of humor like Plato, Aristotle and Cicero are household names. And the most recent research interest has been in such disciplines as psychology, sociology, anthropology and also linguistics. Particularly, with the popularization of the cross-disciplinary research, more and more attention has been attached to the composite study integrating verbal humor with pragmatics after the development of pragmatics as an independent branch of linguistics. Among them, studies carried out under the guidance of PP, CP and face theory stand out from the others. Therefore, this paper will follow the trend and adopt the classical pragmatics theory ---- Cooperative Principle---- to analyze how verbal humor is realized.

As studies on talk shows, sitcoms or entertainment shows have been greatly done, but humor discussion centering on suspense TV series in which amusement is not the only purpose is rare. Therefore, this paper chooses British suspense TV series Sherlock as its object, aiming to find out how humor effects come into being and why the characters flout the CP in Sherlock. As for the theoretical significance, this research proves the validity of Grice’s CP by the analysis of British suspense TV series and it also enriches the related research of suspense TV series.

3. 国内外研究现状

From ancient times to the present, researchers are enthusiastic about performing studies on humor from different domains like logic, philosophy, sociology and so on. Derived from a Latin word referring to ‘liquid’, the term “humor” now has already departed from its original meaning. Based on different studies from various perspectives, many scholars try to define it. According to Nash(1981), humor is a part of culture, institutions, beliefs, attitudes, characteristic artifacts, typical practices, etc. Attardo(1994) sees humor from a pragmatic perspective. To his notion, the definition of humor is related to its purpose of using it. He believes “a humorous text is a text whose perlocutionary goal is to amuse its hearer.” According to the Modern Chinese Standardization Dictionary, the meaning is “something interesting or playful and have deep meaning or thought-provoking. Despite of the various definition of humor from different angles, there is something in common ---- the main underlying purpose of humor is to amuse people and it provokes thoughts at the same time.

Among the studies associated with linguistics, Script Theory of Humor proposed by Raskin was the first theory. According to him (1985), the theory uses semantic scripts to simulate how joke recipients use linguistics and world knowledge to interpret joke text. Based on the extension and revision of Baskin’s Semantic Script Theory of Humor and Attardo’s five-layer humor representation model, Attardo and Raskin collaborated to present the General Theory of Verbal Humor. This theory has illustrated the necessary knowledge for understanding humor as detailed as possible. It provided a theoretical framework for the analysis of complex humor discourses.

Besides the above mentioned two important theories, the studies on humor have also been expanded to the level of phonology and syntax. Some analyzed the function of language ambiguity phenomena as well as the role of puns in causing humor (Shi, 2000). Some focuses on puns and further analyzes the different kinds of puns in English language humor (Yang, 2003). As we can see from the above, the semantic studies on humor center on the meaning and information within the humor discourse. Another significant aspect of humor study is related to pragmatics. Generally speaking, pragmatics studies a particular utterance in particular situation, which takes context into consideration. The relevant theories include presupposition, conversational implicature, speech act theory, and so on.
