1. 研究目的与意义

The essence of translation is to transmit the information accurately from one language to another language. It is an intercultural and interlingual activity. The possibility of translation concerns translatability, it leads us to the fundamental nature of translation. In the field of both practical translation and theoretical translation，there is a dispute over the issue of translatability and untranslatability for a long time. This paper will focus on the problem of untranslatability between English and Chinese from intercultural perspective. A discussion will be made to focus on the translation strategies, aiming to compensate the losses due to untranslatabilibty.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

My paper will aim to analyze the phenomena of intercultural untranslatability between English and Chinese in regard to its causes and strategies of compensation. To explore the phenomena of untranslatability between English and Chinese deeply, the first question is why untranslatability exists, then there is an analysis of the phenomena and the solutions to overcome the problems of untranslatability.

3. 国内外研究现状

There have been a lot of researches on the study of translatability and untranslatability made by both Chinese and foreign scholars. However, China and English speaking countries posess two different types of civilization. It is very difficult to have a comprehensive theory. The exploration of translatability and untranslatability is far from perfection. In foreign countries, studies on untranslatability mainly focus on linguistics aspects, while in China, studies focus on traditional culture. That is why the author attempts to make a research on this topic.
