1. 研究目的与意义

Chinese borrowing words in English reflects the interests of western world in Chinese culture and have profound impact on English. It also reveals it#8217;s not only a pure linguistic phenomenon, but also a social and cultural phenomenon. Studying the phenomena can help us not only deepen comprehension of cultural communication, but also learn more about the linguistic and social meaning of the phenomena.

In the process of study, emphasizing and analyzing borrowing words in English is not only good for English learners to master English vocabulary better and faster, but also increase Chinese enthusiasm in learning English.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This essay is intended to give an analysis of Chinese borrowing words in English. It is divided into five parts. Chapter one is mainly about the origin and classification of Chinese borrowing bords in English. Chapter two tells how these words are borrowed . Chapter three analyzes the usage of these words in English. It consists of four parts, which are using frequency and range , degree of acceptance of western people , change of meaning and trend of usage of the words.Chapter four is about influence of the words on English language purity and cultural communication. Chapter five makes a summary of the essay.

3. 国内外研究现状

Of all the scholars, American professor Garland Cannon has been doing the most study. His purposes are to collect, describe and list the items, inevitably enlarging the known corpus and invalidating the few published generalizations about English borrowings from Chinese. The article Chinese Borrowings in English illustrates his diligent work.

In China, Gao Mingkai and Liu Zhengyan are considered as #8220;the opener of loanwords studies#8221;. The Research on Contemporary Chinese is the first professional loanwords work, in which 456 items are collected. Concretely speaking, Scholars are doing research work mainly in etymological study, such as Qi Kuiyi and Zheng Shengtao. Their articles respectively are Research on the Origins of Some Chinese Loans, and On English Words of Chinese Origins. Professor Wang Rongpei takes a step further in his On Chinese Loans in English. Besides etymological study, he discusses the influence of Chinese language policy on Chines-English borrowing.

Nevertheless, the research in this field is not deep enough, because people often show more concern to foreign loanwords in their own language.
