In recent years, the translation of public signs has gained many scholars’ attention.

Many researchers study the Chinese-English translation of public signs, analyze common problems in public signs translation and try to suggest some strategies from many perspectives, such as communicative translation, translation aesthetics, ecological translation, functional equivalence theory, functional translation theory and so on. A number of researches on the Chinese-English translation of public signs from the perspective of functional translation theory have been made at home .

With the introduction of functional translation theory into China at the turning of the new century, Chinese scholars and researchers tend to employ the functional translation theory in the analysis of public signs translation more often than before. A large number of local journals and papers of translation majors apply functional translation theory to the public signs translation study. There has been thesis based on functional translation theory on public signs translation every year since 2005. For example, Signs and Their Translation written by Qiu Quanju in 2005,Chinese-English Translation of Public Signs in China written by Guo Lijia , A Functionalist approach to the C-E Translation of Public Notice and Signs written by Zhang Shuang in 2006 ,On the Problems and Strategies in C-E Translation of Road and Traffic Signs from a Functionalist approach written by Liu Ping in 2007 and so on .Many domestic researches and papers employ functional translation theory as the guiding theoretical frameworkin the analysis and translation of public signs.
