There are not many monographs about Fitzgerald in China. At present, the domestic researches on Fitzgerald''s works mainly focus on the two novels, #8220;The Great Gatsby#8221; and #8220;Tender is the Night#8221;. Among them, Wu Jianguo (吴建国. 2002.) gives a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the research on Fitzgerald domestically. Wu jianguo captures the artistic features of Fitzgerald#8217;s works, mainly from the perspectives of narrative point of view, artistic and linguistic styles. The works of Fitzgerald are dramatically in a striking performance of his successes and failures in life. Like Kathleen Parkinson (Kathleen Parkinson. Critical Studies Great Gatsby[M]. London: Penguin UK; Stg edition, 1988.) brings all of this together into a real reading experience in her book #8220;Critical Studies Great Gatsby#8221;. The Great Gatsby is fiction. However it is fiction based on a combination of details about the author''s own life and the circumstances of the time period, society, and location. At the same time, they enrich the happiness and sadness of a generation in every possible way. In terms of art, the author suggests that Fitzgerald is good at using various symbols and metaphors, and is good at capturing and refining vivid images and accurate expressive language from life. His unique design of the narrative subject always shorten the distance between the reader, the text and the author to the utmost, and make the person feel authentic, reliable and convenient to participate in. In his works, words and sentences are very simple and fresh, as beautiful as prose poetry. Some researchers discuss the inner world of the novel characters and the social and historical situation reflected from the theme of the novel. For example, Zhao Feng (赵峰. 2010,(05):242-243. [2017-09-26].) discusses the protagonist Dick''s 'American Dream', explores the social and personal factors of the disillusionment of the American dream and reveals its significance. There are also some other researchers have studied Fitzgerald''s novel from a feminist perspective. For example, Han Wei (韩薇. 2007.) expounds the inner experience of the falling of female characters in Fitzgerald''s writings; Zhao Dongmin analyzes the causes of female paranoid through the description of women in #8220;The Great Gatsby#8221;. In addition to reading from a feminist perspective, some scholars have made an analysis of Fitzgerald''s works from a male perspective in recent years. Apart from studying the ideological content of works, there are still a large number of researchers study Fitzgerald''s novels from the artistic skills. For example, Wang Bo (王波. 2010.) makes a detailed analysis of the novel from the perspective of narratology. Yang Huan analyzes the use of symbolic imagery in details, classifies the artistic expressions and explains the role of symbolism in the text. The same as Fitzgerald, there are few studies on Richard Yates and his works in China, and the research angle is relatively single and centralized. Except his representative work Revolutionary Road, researches on his short stories and other novels lack sufficient attention. The most of research on Revolutionary Road has been done from a feminist perspective, for example, Li Xinlei (李欣蕾. 2011.) analyses April#8217;s alienation behavior in this work as a member of the society, a wife and a mother. The purpose of her paper is to unscramble and prove the tragic status of women in capitalist society. 2011.) analyses the women who are materialized in patriarchal society, the main reasons for the failure of certain aspects of women in patriarchal society, the awareness of patriarchal society and female images with rebellious spirit in that patriarchal society. In addition, there also exist some scholars study this novel from the perspective of existentialism and ethical relations, the disillusionment of the American dream and the ideal predicament. Actually, research studies on Richard Yates and his works are deficient throughout the world. In the analysis of works, Stewart O#8217;Nan#8217;s The Lost World of Richard Yates--How the great writer of the Age of Anxiety disappeared from print [J]. Boston Review, 1999, 10(1):20-23.) analyzes all the works of Yates and praised his unique literary value. In the aspect of biography studies, Blake Bailey#8217;s A Tragic Honesty: The Life and work of Richard Yates [M]. Florida: Picador; Reprint, 2004.) analyses Richard Yates#8217; works and writing styles, and records Richard Yates#8217; marriage, friends and social status in details.

In my essay, I will select some of their representative works and try to compare and analyze the works from the aspects of characters, ideological content and artistic features. It is hoped that these comparisons will fully highlight the uniqueness of the two novels, show their excellent literary and artistic value, reveal the profound social problems reflected in the works and critical realist meaning. At the same time, we can also dig out some of the highlights of Yates#8217;s works that has been neglected. Secondly, I will try to compare these two works#8217; social criticism and reflection in a new way. These two works reflect the social conditions of the United States in the 1920s and 1950s. Due to the continuity of history and the lag of social problems, there are similarities between the problems of the times reflected in these two books. Comprehensive analysis and exploration of social problems in different times will help us a lot to rethink American society in the twentieth Century from a deep and coherent perspective.

Meanwhile, the paper should be finished and handed in time.
