1. 研究目的与意义

Biography is a traditional form of literature, and its function is to describe the life of a historical figure, and it contains both veracity and literariness. It is more authentic than literature and is more literal than the historical records. In addition to the historical materials, the biography also contains the literary description and the author''s personal understandings. The text subject in a biography is usually different from the real person in history. In different biographies of a same figure，the text subjects can be very different.

In order to research the diversity of text subjects of Alexander Hamilton''s biographies， this paper chooses 5 biographies of Alexandra Hamilton as the research objects. These five biographies were published in different periods of ages.

As a historical figure , Hamilton is controversial in his personal life and his contributions. As one of the founding fathers of America, he is less famous than the others , like Washington and Jefferson. However, in recent years, the public begin to reconsider his historical role and the evaluation. The broadway show 'Hamilton:an American Musical' in 2015 was a huge success, and made him return to the historical stage as an actively striving immigrant. Both his legendary experiences and his influence after life deserve researches.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

1.Research Contents

This paper is about to research the diversity of text subjects of biographies. The five biographies chosen are Alexander Hamilton: The Formative Years (2015), Alexander Hamilton(2004), Alexander Hamilton: An intimate portrait (1982), Alexander Hamilton: Youth to Maturity (1957) and Alexander Hamilton(1946).

The research target is to find out the existence of the diversity and study its formation. To get the final conclusion, the main research approach is making compulsories of different versions of the biographies of Hamilton and find out the differences. The comparison will be made mainly in the descriptions of Hamilton''s life stories and the evaluations of Hamilton written by different authors.

3. 国内外研究现状

So far, there have been few studies on the text subject of biography. But there are sufficient researchs on biography and researchs on Hamilton to support the thesis.

First, about the studies of biographies abroad, In the field of modern biography study, the first modern biography is said to be 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', written by James Boswell in 1791. It began a new era of biography. In 1918 , British critic Lytton Strachey revolutionized the art of biographical writing with his work Eminent Victorians and set the standard for 20th century biographical writing .In recent years, the debates of biographies are more likely on its definition--whether biographies are fiction. John Nawas published 'Biography and Biographical Works' in 2006, the book discussed the relationship and differences between biography and biographical works.

At home, in 1996，'Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art' published an article titled '传记就是传记，不要叫传记文学' written by anonymous，in this essay, the author claimed his opinion clearly that biography is all about truth, and should not be literally embellished. In 2014, professor Yu Zhanghua from Zhejiang University and Zhang Licheng from Shaoxing University co.writed a journal article-'论传记作者与传记真实性的关系', discussed the relationship between the author and the Authenticity of biography. The conclusion was that the author is closely related to the authenticity of his work. About the progress of biography studies, in 2009 Nanjing University published 'A Modern Poetics of Biography 'written by professor Yang Zhengrun. This book absorbed the experience of the biographies at home and abroad, and constructed a theoretical system of modern biographies. Yang also is the chief editor of Journal of Modern Life Writing Studies> since its first publication in 2013, it is a publication studies and discusses different issues of biographies.

4. 计划与进度安排

The paper will be written according to the outline. The first phase of the study is looking for resources and gathering useful information. The biographies and studies of Hamilton are used as references. In order to make the research more considerate, some other papers and studies are also referred. The paper will also pay attention to the aspect of biography writing. The purpose of the research is to analyze the diversity of text subjects of Alexander Hamilton''s biographies, so it is also important to get to know more about biography. After the first stage, the paper will focus on analyzing the objects and getting conclusions. The paper will be finished in time.
